Departure from Karakol
The #331 Marshrutka departs from the Ak-Tilek Market (Main Bazaar). You can find the boarding area on the northern side of the market. Unlike city buses, this is a regional route with specific departure times.
- Schedule: Generally, the bus runs three times a day (morning, midday, and late afternoon). It is highly recommended to arrive at the station at least 20 minutes early to secure a seat, as it is a popular route for villagers returning home with supplies. On some local holidays the schedule can be easily changed without a notice.
The Journey
The 65 km drive takes over two hours because the road climbs significantly as you approach the village. You will pass through several small settlements and wind through beautiful valleys. As you get closer to Jyrgalan, the scenery opens up into vast alpine meadows surrounded by jagged peaks.
Returning to Karakol
To return, the #331 departs from the main bus stup in the center of Jyrgalan village (near the guesthouses). Current departure times are 7:30am, 10:30am, 4:30pm.
- Tip: Ask your guesthouse host for the exact current departure times, as they can shift slightly depending on the season. If you miss the bus, private taxis are available but significantly more expensive.
What to See & Do in Jyrgalan
- Kok-Bel Waterfall: A pleasant and relatively easy hike from the village that leads to a beautiful cascade. Great for a half-day trip.
- Turnaluu-Kol (Crane Lake): A stunning alpine lake located a few hours' hike from the village. In late spring and summer, it’s a peaceful spot surrounded by wildflowers.
- Boordok Pass & Tulpar-Kul: For more experienced hikers, the trails leading out of Jyrgalan offer access to high-altitude passes and pristine glacial lakes.
- Horseback Riding: Jyrgalan is one of the best places in Kyrgyzstan for horse trekking. You can arrange anything from a 2-hour ride to a multi-day expedition.
- Winter Sports: If you visit in winter, Jyrgalan is world-famous for skitouring and backcountry freeriding due to the massive amounts of dry, powdery snow.

- Check the Schedule Early: The #331 marshrutka is not like city transport; it runs on a fixed schedule (usually 3 times a day). It is wise to visit the Ak-Tilek market a day before or ask your guesthouse to confirm the current departure times, as they can fluctuate by 30-60 minutes depending on the season.
- Cash is Essential: There are no ATMs or banks in Jyrgalan village. Ensure you have enough Kyrgyz Som (KGS) in cash to cover your transport, guesthouse stay, meals, and any horse rentals before leaving Karakol.
- Prepare for Microclimates: Jyrgalan is higher and wetter than Karakol. Even if it is a sunny day in the city, the village can be significantly colder or catch sudden mountain rain. Always pack a waterproof shell and a warm layer, regardless of the forecast.
- Stock Up on Supplies: While the village has a couple of tiny "magazines" (small shops), the selection is very basic (mostly snacks, bread, and drinks). If you need specific hiking fuel, sunscreen, or personal hygiene items, buy them in Karakol before you depart.
- Connectivity: Mobile signal can be spotty in the valley. Most guesthouses offer Wi-Fi, but it’s a good idea to download offline maps (like Maps.me or Google Maps) for the hiking trails before you leave the city.
